Made for a melodrama

IMG_5183.JPGOne of the recurring thoughts from Saturday is how my head banged the road during the crash.  I remember all too vividly the thump of my helmet as it hit hard.  Thank god I was wearing a good, protective helmet.  My old 5 bar leather toe strap helmet wouldn’t have helped me much.

My helmet is cracked in 5 places, its probably worse than it looks.  But there are obvious dents and scrapes on the outside as well as the inside.

Ironically, we bought Ruth a new lid last Friday and being a good kid she challenged why we needed to spend so much money on it…  They say a picture is worth a thousand words:IMG_5186.JPG

I did that to an atmos helmet last fall, too…They are good, though…saved my head in both cases :-) (my shoulder/arm wasn’t so lucky, either, though)

I’ve done in a helmet or two in my days. I am not sure of Giros’s current policy, but the last two Bell’s I cracked were replaced for something like $25 under their crash replacement policy.

Not only the helmet but good glasses are important, too. In a bad accident in 2002 it is obvious I rolled along on something sharp; had a nice cut going from just below the lower edge of the glasses to the tip of the chin. One lens of the glasses and the helmet had nice grooves cut into them, but they saved the eye and scalp.

Smashed a helmet up pretty good when I touched up a few years ago. I used to ride without a helmet when I was single/no kids. Had I had the fall I had while not wearing the lid, I’d be dead. I ended up concussed pretty good, but that only enhanced my already spectacular charm (so says my wife when she got to the crash site). Broke some ribs in that same fall, so now I wear a flap jacket. I take a lot of heat for it, but I think it will be the wave of the future. That and football shoulder pads will become mandatory akin to the bike helmet today.
